New Art Box Studio offers online art classes each Monday and welcomes watermedia (watercolor or acrylic) painters. Artist-owner Sylvia Megerdichian NWS offers mentorship, as well as lessons, as part of her Monday Online Art Session time.

During Monday Online Art Sessions,  Sylvia offers optional lessons and experimental exercises to encourage students of all levels to grow as artists.

Format for Monday Online Art Sessions:

Every Monday at 9:30 am, there will be a lesson sent to each student’s email. The lesson will be explained in detail and images sent as samples.  The student, after painting the lesson (or just doing their own idea painting), sends an image of their painting to Sylvia (via e-mail) . . . at which time Sylvia will do a personal critic of the students work.

Monday Online Art Sessions:

Student must register by email and then Sylvia will send you her mailing address. You will be registered for the class, once you send your payment to Sylvia’s mailing address.

Sample Online Art Session E-mail Material:

Good morning, All thru my life, Henri Matisse has been my favorite and still is!!!  Today I found a wonderful quote by him.

“What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of trouble and depressing subject matter.  An art which might be for every mental worker, be he businessman or writer, like an appeasing influence, like a mental soother, something like a good armchair in which to rest from physical fatigue” Henri Matisse.

Images sent – 1) painting by Barbara Nechis (pattern/texture), 2) painting by Helen’s sister Mary Sievers (shape) 3) Helen’s painting (shape/texture) 4) painting by Sylvia (color/shape). Of course all the paintings might have value, line, pattern, etc too

Today’s lesson is going to be about the color black.  Most watercolor teachers “prohibit” the student from using black and if they allow you to use black then of course you are asked to mix your own black.  I say that its the choice of the painter to use tube black or to mix it….and to use it in your painting IF you need to.  Milford Zornes once quoted someone else who had said ” that black is the Queen of color!’  Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Milford Zornes, Christopher Schink, Gerald Brommer, Katherine Chang Liu, Skip Lawrence, Barbara Nechis and many other famous painters have used black. So now you have permission to use black…in some paintings..if you want to.

Some mixtures on various shades of black using only 3 colors: You can also mix black with other colors.

Blue black…2 parts winsor blue, one part burnt sienna, one part alizarin cimson

Red Black…half part winsor blue, one part burnt sienna, two parts alizarin

Dead Black one part winsor blue, one part burnt sienna, one part alizarin (this is as black as it gets).

Ideas: In your painting…use black lines, black shapes, black pattern or texture etc…but make sure that one or two stand out more. Using black and white will give you the most contrast.  You can also use black with bright color.  Maybe do a painting today using black, white and gray. Maybe do a painting today getting ideas from the images I sent you.  Please do not copy the images. The images and my lessons are the product of the artist.

Lets us see what happens when we use the color black today.
